> 2009/10 Squad latest...

Manager Rob Dunion completed the signings of ADAM STURGESS and TOM MILLS last night to bring new faces at Cecil Street up to 10.

"Adam - who is no stranger to Cecil Street - comes after spending last season with Grantham and then Rugby Town. Tom arrives from UCL champions S&L and again will be no stranger to the surroundings having played for Rothwell in the past." Dunion said.

"I am hoping to be able to unveil another new striker by Tuesday evening's open friendly against a strong Rushden and Diamonds side."

Bones manager Rob Dunion

The following players all re-signed for the 2009-2010 season: DANNY MARLOW, KEV BYRNE, MICHAEL BOYLE-CHONG, SAM MAUDE, DAVID GLASS, SIMON UNDERWOOD, ROBBIE MADDOX, MARTIN FLANNIGAN AND SHAUN GOODALL.

"The squad sits at 19 at the moment and I hope to finalise the final one or two faces before next Tuesday. There is healthy competition for places and I have spelt out to the lads that ALL shirts for the opening Southern league game of the season are up for grabs, it's down to them."

"Four or five of the youth team will also have the opportunity to sign Southern league forms and again it's up to them, if they train hard and produce on the field then they will be given an opportunity, Liam Waddy (goalkeeper), Michael Cirrelli (Midfield) and Kyle Locklin will definitely be used in pre-season." Dunion added.

> Rothwell Town set for new cash

We are pleased to announce that Neil Griffin has taken over as chief executive at the club.

Neil has been instrumental in raising funds for the Bones and looking to stabilise things off-the-field, and is now bringing in new investment – including money from a Monte Carlo-based businessman – that could run into six figures.

Naturally, with the numerous difficulties and challenges the club has had recently, this is very much welcome and Neil is confident the Bones will be upwardly mobile from now on.

RTFC badge

"This money we're bringing in will ensure we are debt-free," he said.

"We're now at the start of a three to five-year plan and we'll see how far we can go.

"It's not about just throwing money at the team and paying big wages to players, only to find there's nothing left when you need to push on.

"It's about getting the infrastructure of the club right and giving us a solid platform from which to build on."

The first part of that is Cecil Street itself, which is set to undergo a serious makeover.

Cecil St - set for a makeover

"We have a fine asset in the ground. We own that and the land it's on and we need to make more use of it," he added.

"That means making it a better place for people to come to, not just the stadium but the clubhouse and other buildings there.

"So we're shutting down the club for the next two months while we basically gut the place and modernise it.

"That will mean new windows, doors, new panels and a whole overhaul of the site that will make it look like a Southern League ground again.

"We're also making sure we have solid foundations on the playing side, not just the first team but the whole club.

"As such, we've now got the ladies teams and academy sides, which run from under-12 to under-18, all based at Cecil Street and they will have the facilities to help them continue to develop."

> U18s do Rothwell proud in final

Monday 4th May 2009: Mangotsfield United 1 Rothwell Town 0

Rothwell Town had the better of the opening exchanges but were once again undone by a set-piece to go 1-0 down.

Mangotsfield were an older and very physical side who extended the law to its full limit.

Rothwell worked hard and played some excellent football but were always struggling against the approach of the opposition.

The last 15 minutes saw each team swap chances both coming close but to no avail.

The lads and staff will be bitterly disappointed but can hold their heads up high in the manner they suffered defeat.

RB Travel would also like to thank them for the immaculate condition the coach was left in.

The under 18’s would like to thank Gordon, Neil and Jim for their help on the day and the 50 plus Rothwell supporters who journeyed to Abingdon.

Rothwell Town 1 Stamford 1

Rothwell Town pressured Stamford for 45 minutes on every part of the pitch but were unable to beat the Stamford keeper. The second half saw Stamford take an early lead after Rothwell stood off the opposition for the first time and saw an excellent finish by the Stamford player.

Rothwell again pressurized all over the park and moved the ball to use the full width of the park. Half way through the second half Marvellous Entiriwaa was brought down and the penalty was duly dispatched by Ben Aidulis. Rothwell keeper Liam Waddy was forced in to a fine save by a wicked bounce and the Stamford keeper pulled off a great reaction save from Michael Cirelli. Rothwell had some good chances to win the game but to no avail.

An excellent performance by the lads.

Thrapston 4 Rothwell Town 2

Rothwell went to Thrapston with a number of injuries but still had a pretty strong side, the lads were asked to play a different formation and some players in new positions to see how much they had taken on board this season.

The ground was very slippery and sticky and with the majority of the Thrapston side playing their last under 18 game was going to be a good test for the Rothwell lads.

Thrapston started the better and proved to be a very fit side, running box to box with direct football but also attacking and defending in numbers. Rothwell struggled to meet the physical demands and pace of the game and fell 2 goals down one from a penalty.

The second half saw a totally different Rothwell turn out (must have been something that was said) Rothwell moved the ball quicker and pressed the opposition and were rewarded with goals from Callum Aldrich and Michael Cirelli, it looked as if they were going on to win the game however Rothwell conceded from a corner and then a penalty to lose the match.

> Rothwell Town 3 - 1 Stourport Swifts

Saturday 25th April -
match report

Rothwell Town clinched their place in next season's BGB Division One Midlands campaign dramatically on the very last day of the campaign with a 3-1 win over Stouport Swifts at Cecil Street.

With the Bones needing results elsewhere to go the right way in addition to notching some vital points as well, it was always going to be a nerve-wracking day but the only thing the home side could do was take care of their own game and that they did.

RTFC badge Stourport Swifts crest

Robbie Maddox was the first to strike, as his fourth goal in six games on 25 minutes put the Bones in the lead. But elsewhere, Woodford United had also taken the lead - against Soham Town Rangers - so at this point it was still the Bones that would face the drop.

Come the 2nd half, and Shaun Goodall hit home two quick-fire goals on 52 and 55mins to add some stability to the Bones' lead, yet it was Woodford who still led against Soham so the league table positionally remained the same.

But at around the hour mark, Woodford Utd were awarded a penalty. Score, and safety was as-good-as secured for them. The Soham keeper saved it, and Rothwell lived another day. Ten minutes later, the latest and final chapter was written as Soham equalised at Woodford to make it 1-1, and move the Bones out of the relegation zone! Stourport netted a consolation at Cecil Street but once the final whistles were blown around 20 minutes later it was Rothwell who had pulled off a remarkable last-day-of-the-season survival victory and rounded off a difficult and testing season with the most positive outcome - a place in the BGB Division One Midlands league for season 2009-10.

Rothwell Town have reached the point of no return in their bid to remain a BGB Southern League side. But the situation is simple enough for the Bones.

As long as they get a better result at home to Stourport Swifts than Woodford United manage at home to Soham Town Rangers, they will survive in Division One Midlands.

> U18s crash out of League K.O. Cup in 2nd Round

Cogenhoe 3 Rothwell Town 1 (aet)

Rothwell crashed out of the cup in extra time. Rothwell Town led until the 96 minute when with pretty much the last action saw Cogenhoe equalize from a corner. It could have been so different as Rothwell wasted 3 glorious chances towards the end of normal time but Cogenhoe could also have secured a win as Rothwell rode their luck at times.

Callum Bowyer put Rothwell ahead with a penalty before Cogenhoe forced extra time, Cogenhoe went ahead in the first period of extra time and quickly added a second. Michael Cirelli was sent off as Cogenhoe celebrated their goal. With 20 min left Rothwell took the game to Cogenhoe but a mixture of good defending, solid goalkeeping and missed chances saw Rothwell’s cup exit.

I have never been one to moan about the officials but Rothwell had seven bookings and a sending off to Cogenhoe's one. It tells it's own story from a referee who is a Championship referee in a hard fought cup game that was not in the least bit dirty. Sometimes the respect campaign works both ways and this official lost the respect of players, spectators and officials in the way he handled this game.

Rothwell should be proud of their teams performance.

match report

Match Sponsor: Hevey Building Ltd

The Bones have much to be proud about in this penultimate league game of the campaign, having drawn with second-placed Nuneaton Town but it was tinged with the frustration of having conceded two quick-fire goals to deny the full three points.

Rothwell went 1-0 up in the 28th minute when Danny Maddox netted an penalty, before Michael Boyle-Chong doubled the lead three minutes after the break. A lapse in concentration for the following three minutes was to be the undoing of this potential win as goals from Blenkinsopp (49 mins) and Odi (51 mins) brought the scores level.

With one game remaining - at home to Stourport Swifts on Saturday (25th April) - the Bones must go for the win and hope that the results from Woodford and Arlesey go the right way to pull off survival.

The Bones slipped into the relegation zone today as they went down 2-1 at Bromsgrove Rovers. The home side took the lead on 36 mins through Richards before Kyle Locklin equalised four minutes into the second half.

It was Bromsgrove who snatched the points four minutes from time when Richards netted his second of the game, in a result which puts even greater significance on the final two games of the season - Nuneaton and Stourport Swifts at home (Tues 21st, Sat 25th).

Saturday 18th April: kick-off 3pm

Rothwell go into tomorrow's game at Bromsgrove Rovers right in the thick of a five-way battle to avoid joining Malvern Town in leaving the division by the wrong end.

As it stands, just three points covers the Bones, Arlesey Town, Woodford United, Dunstable Town and Barton Rovers.

Barton and Woodford have just two games left, Bones and Arlesey three and Dunstable fourth. It's all down to who blinks first.

Bones boss Rob Dunion can at least take heart from the fact his team have started picking up points again without playing at their best.

Rothwell need that trend to continue for the rest of the season and their prospects appear good against a mid-table side that has only won once in its last six and has only pride to play for.

"It's another game where we have to go for the win and we have to go there with a plan for taking points," said Dunion.

"We have to go for the win, a draw is no good to us at this stage.
"We have three games left and six points will see us safe but that's easier said than done.

"It comes down to the old factor of needing to put the ball in the net but also remembering to enjoy playing as well.

"We're going there to do something we enjoy, namely play football. Once we start finding it a chore, then we're in trouble."

Mark Hackett returns to bolster the defence in the only change to the Bones squad.

> Young Bones win Southern League Cup Semi Final

Thurs 16th April 2009

Rothwell Town 2 - 2 Banbury United (Rothwell won 4 - 3 on penalties)

We can be proud of the boys' achievement last night, they were no match for a more physical Banbury side, who at time played some good football and were quick to the tackle. But the lads battled hard got their foot in where they could and tried to upset the opposition the best they could.

Banbury applied some excellent pressure, and nervous, resilient defending by Town kept them at bay. Town were the first to score through Ryan Cherry but firstly a sloppy pass let in Banbury for an equaliser and soon Town were 2-1 down when Liam Waddy pulled down the opposition in the box for a penalty.

The second half saw Rothwell continue to battle and when in possession try to play good passing football, with 5 minutes to go Rothwell equalised as Kyle Locklin rounded the keeper and slotted the ball home from a tight angle. Banbury had shouts for a penalty in the last minute and luck favoured Rothwell when it was turned down. The game then went to penalties, Banbury’s first was saved by Liam Waddy, Rothwell missed their 4th but another fantastic save by Liam Waddy saw Ben Aidulis go to take the winning penalty.

The boys' final is on the 4th May - opposition and venue still to be decided.

Next week they are away to Cogenhoe in the Second Round of the League Cup, and they also have four more league fixtures still to play before the end of April.

> U18s into the Second Round of the League Cup

Thurs 9th April 2009

Rothwell Town 3 - 1 Cranfield United

Rothwell once again started a fixture with a small squad of 11 as three players dropped out on the evening of the game. It meant once again the 11 that did turn up had to play 90 min and that was a big ask for some of the players, playing 3 games a week for the last month.

The first half was very even with both teams creating chances in a very entertaining 45 minutes, Cranfield taking the lead before Jordan Henson equalised at the far post.

Once again the second half saw Cranfield dominate possession as Rothwell gave the ball away, however unlike Tuesday Rothwell battled for everything to keep the chances to half chances which Liam Waddy dealt with comfortably and forced the Cranfield keeper in to 3 fine saves. In the last 15min Rothwell started to string some possession together, and with 10 left a long through ball saw Kyle Locklin go 1-on-1 with the keeper, driving the ball in to the far corner. A minute later an identical pass saw Michael Cirelli out-pace the defence and round the keeper before placing the ball into the far corner.

The 3-1 win takes Rothwell Town in to the Second Round of the League Cup. Probably another game that the lads could have done with out but are happy to have. I cannot ask any more from the lads at present, and with at least 7 games still to fit in before the end of April, performances are still going to be hit and miss.

We set out to develop the lads in the league with performance coming first but show that development by getting the results in the cup games, Having lost the FA Youth Cup early in the season to Cranfield, they have not lost in either the Southern League Youth or League cup since. On Sunday a number of the lads play in the countywide under 18 and with Earls Barton playing Rothwell Aztec on 19th April in the league cup final - it will see 10 of this year's Rothwell Town squad taking part.

Danny Marlow scored for the Bones midway through the first half to make it two draws over the Easter weekend. Graham scored for the away side in the 8th minute to take the lead, before Marlow equalised on 23 mins.

He struck a shot towards the Aylesbury goal, the keeper got behind it, hit his chest, bounced out and crossed the line. The keeper tried to claw it back but the linesman awarded it. They all count, as they say.

Bromsgrove away is next on the cards for Rothwell on Saturday (18th April), before Nuneaton (Tues 21st) and finally, Stourport Swifts (Sat 25th) visit Cecil Street.

Rothwell Town head to bottom side Malvern Town in BGB Southern League Division One Midlands in the rare position of being favourites to win. The Bones got three vital points at home to Leighton Town in midweek and another win tomorrow should all but make them safe from relegation.

Prior to the Leighton game, Bones boss Rob Dunion had said his side needed three more good results to keep them up.

Leighton was the first of those and the second should come tomorrow. Read more>>

Stamford 4 - 0 Rothwell Town

Rothwell went in to the game having had a number of senior players pull out that afternoon, forcing a few changes in positions and some of the lads due to be rested having to play 90 min.

The first half saw Rothwell more than equal to Stamford and whilst not always coming off trying to do everything right and it provided a very entertaining first half.

The second half was probably the worst team performance they have produced, second to every ball and tackle, and the control and passing was poor. Hearts had fallen off their sleeves and any discipline in formation had been long left in the dressing room.

Take nothing away from Stamford they upped their whole game in the second half with some excellent football and were deserved 4-0 winners.

It is coming to the end of the season and the lads cannot keep using the excuse about being young it is time for a lot of them to grow up on and off the field.

Tuesday 7th April 2009 - match report

Match sponsor - High Level Glazing

Three huge points in Rothwell Town's season chalked up tonight at Cecil Street as the Bones saw off play-off chasing Leighton Town 3-1.

Goalless at half-time, the home side took the lead through Robbie Maddox eleven minutes into the second half.

Leighton asked a question of Rothwell though when they equalised with just 10 minutes to go, through Silvestrie. The Bones answered emphatically as they regained their lead five minutes later with Maddox's second of the evening.

Fazel Koriya made sure of the maximum points in the final minute to put smiles on the faces of the Rothwell faithful.

An Easter weekend double header is next on the agenda as the Bones make the trip to bottom club Malvern Town on Sat (11th April) before returning to Cecil St on Monday (13th April) to host Aylesbury United. Both of these games are 3pm kick-offs.

Rothwell Town 5 - 0 Oxford City

Jack Marriott (3), Ryan Finnegan (1), Mason Thomas (1)

Rothwell Town under 14's went into this match knowing that they had already secured the section title. Throughout the year the team has improved as individuals and collectively. A number of lads have gained trials and some have been fortunate enough to have been given contracts, with more players to follow in the same direction I am sure.

Before I proceed to today’s match, I would just like to thank the players for their effort/the parents for their support and also the coaches and assistants I have both on and off the field. I would also like to thank the other teams in both sections (whom we have played this season) for showing our players the level that they can and need to reach consistently.

Onto to todays match, the last time these two teams met at the beginning of the season Oxford came out 1-0 winners. Today, in an even first half where both teams tried to play good football, Rothwell had gone 1-0 ahead through Ryan Finnegan and had Alex Vitue to thank in goal for a superb save to keep that score-line until half time.

In the second half Rothwell started a lot brighter and went further ahead through Mason Thomas. The Oxford goalkeeper then himself pulled off a superb save before a brilliant Jack Marriott hat-trick sealed a great second half performace. Both teams continued to play some nice football and deserve a lot of credit for both sets of performances today.

Another thank-you must go to Andy Barnett and his members for all the hard work they have to do to allow this successful league to thrive for the right reasons.

One last big thank-you must go the Rothwell Town themselves as the support for the youth section in its first year from everyone within the club has been outstanding.

Looking forward to next season already.

Rothwell Town 1 - 3 Wellingborough Town

Those who attended the game last night saw an excellent game with pace, passion and high levels of technical ability.

Wellingborough, top of the table came knowing that anything short of a top level performance could see them leaving Cecil Street on the wrong end of the result. They came with an experienced line up and from the kick off both teams locked horns neither giving an inch in an end to end contest.

At half time Rothwell were edging both possession and performance but failed to capitalise on their opportunities. The second half saw Wellingborough pressurise Rothwell as they fell in to the trap of overplaying in the defensive third and not stretching the game with positive passes.

Wellingborough broke the deadlock from a corner with the ball being forced over on the line, offside the ref said no. Rothwell fought back and equalised through a Kyle Locklin penalty after he was brought down Wellingborough said no the ref said yes.

Shortly after Rothwell rattled the post then saw a shot hit the side netting. Wellingborough bounced back as a through ball bobbled over the keepers foot, the Wellingborough player pulled it across the goal only to see Nick Herbert find his own net. Wellingborough went 2 ahead with a turn on the edge of the box and netting from the subsequent shot. Rothwell tried hard but could not find the clear opportunities to peg them back.

Many thanks to Spud and Claire for their assistance last night it was greatly appreciated.

Next game Tues away to Stamford and then Thurs home to Cranfield.

Eynesbury 2 - 3 Rothwell Town

The squad was even smaller than expected with only 10 players being available for the fixture.

The football was excellent and the lads worked hard for each other, despite a couple of times where they fell asleep or over complicated their passing in defence. Rothwell dealt with everything Eynesbury had to offer. Kyle Locklin scored the first direct from a free kick, Michael Cirelli and Kyle Locklin added second half goals.

A character building display.

> Rothwell Town Youth 0 - 5 Rothwell Corinthians

A tired looking performance from the Bones, lacking ideas, any pace to their game and second to the tackle. Nothing however could be taken away from Corinthians who closed down from the whistle and played a strong running game with some excellent individual performances.

The Bones played some nice pretty football from the off but too much of it was negative, over played and slow and this allowed Corinthians to pressure Town and led to the first goal after 15 minutes. Town picked up the pace a little but with two head collisions in a couple of minutes between Town players saw two players coming off - one for stitches, the second with concussion. After a restructure Town played better towards the end of the half and were unlucky not to equalise when Ryan Cherry hit the post.

The second half saw Corinthians dominate especially 1st team player Ben White and Corinthians added four. Town had a couple of good chances but hitting the woodwork and pulling a shot wide left them without a goal.

It is going to be a tough end to the season for these lads as for many, it was their 4th game in nine days. With most participating for teams at the weekend and games on Tues and Thurs there will be not let-up and this could be the first of a few tired looking performances.

Committed to the tackle, committed to the cause, nobody can say the boys do not shun a challenge, in 3 separate instances in the last two games Rothwell Town players have sidelined their own players with a broken nose, concussion and stitches to a head wound. I think the lads need to start communicating.

Rothwell Town go into tonight's rearranged game at Cecil Street against Romulus off the back off a confidence boosting win against rivals Barton Rovers. It is the 2nd in a series of three consecutive home games for the Bones as they look to keep distance between themselves and the bottom places.

Manager Rob Dunion: "The original game on 3rd March was called off at half time due to a waterlogged pitch but if it where a boxing match it would have been stopped well before that!!

" Even though the game was only 22 days ago, we have six changes to the squad that went out that night. After Saturday's important win over Barton Rovers, it is important that we keep focused as we still need to look over our shoulders at the chasing pack.

" We are aware of what we need to do to stay up and thats the crux of the remainder of the season. "

New signing Sam Maude who was playing for Northampton Town last season and Alex Malong are added to Saturday's squad which will be without suspended pair Kev Byrne and Robbie Maddox.

Ali Wiltshire signed from Corby Town will make his debut tonight.

> Under 14s win 10th League match in a row and clinch the Title!

Rugby Town 0 - 2 Rothwell Town YDC

Rothwell Town YDC travelled to Rugby Town knowing a win would secure the league title. Numerous players looked nervous before kick off and this showed in the first half when the simple passes were not completed and the movement that has been showed in previous weeks was not evident.

Throughout the first half despite not playing to the level we have come to expect this season, Rothwell were never put under much pressure in the final third and went ahead themselves through Devante Hodgson.

In the second half Rothwell came out brighter and started to play some good controlled football. Rothwell went close to increasing the scoreline on numerous occassions but somehow never found the back of the net. Rugby then went close with one of their few forays at goal but Alex Vitue managed to pull off a fine save to deny them the equalizer.

Jack Marriott then found some space and coolly managed to convert his opportunity to increase Rothwell's scoreline. For the remainder of the match Rothwell could play their normal level of football without the pressure and comfortably held on to secure the victory and the title.

Well done lads for all your hard work and effort.

> U18s: Raunds Town 3 - 2 Rothwell Town

Rothwell went to league leaders Raunds last night in a confident mood that they could get a result, without 1st team squad members Kyle Locklin and James Lorimer and on the back of recent wins.

The first 10 minutes saw Rothwell with their backs to the wall as Raunds sent in an air raid of balls to keep pressure on the Rothwell defence, long throws, corners and free kicks were too numerous to count but the defence held strong and Rothwell started to get the ball moving.

The game did not lack in physical presence with neither side bottling any tackle and this was epitomised with Jordan Henson leaving the field after 15 min with a broken nose. Rothwell had their chances with the best coming from Nick Herbert going one on one only to be thwarted by he keeper. One minute before half time, after a set piece, Rothwell allowed a cross to come in from wide and the Raunds player headed home.

The second half only saw a bigger Rothwell display and Dale Reece equalized, this was followed by other Rothwell chances before Raunds scored two quick goals; the first capatilising on a defensive mistake in the box and the second the ball hitting the bar and bouncing in off the keepers back.

With Rothwell down to 10 and as Bowyer having lengthy treatment anybody would have thought game over but not the lads on the pitch they destroyed the opposition and with Callum Bowyer back on the pitch scored a second as Michael Cirelli nipped between the centre halves on a through ball and flicked it over the advancing keeper. Right to the end Rothwell applied pressure but to no avail.

A fantastic game and we wish to thank Raunds Town not only for their hospitality but also producing an excellent playing surface and their part in a terrific game.

The next game for the lads is Rothwell Corinthians at Cecil St next Thursday (26th March). Get yourselves up to the ground to support these lads.

Under 18’s go through to the semi final of the Youth Cup - which is expected to be against Banbury.

Woodford started off resilient against a Rothwell side without Kyle Locklin and Ryan Cherry - both injured - and a number unavailable, and it took until midway through the first half before Nick Herbert netted, forcing the ball over the line at the far post.

This gave a confidence boost to Rothwell who began to let the football flow and stretched the game on both flanks, allowing them to add four more in the first half.

The second half saw Woodford have a go at Rothwell but the defence held strong and Rothwell once again started to dominate proceedings and added three more to their tally.

Goal scorers: Nick Herbert (2), Callum Bowyer (2), Michael Cirelli, Jordan Henson, James Lorimer, own goal.

On a bright morning at Cecil Street, you could sense that both sets of players were determined to produce a good performance. As soon as the match kicked off, Rothwell Town took control and looked convincing for large periods of the 1st half and some great teamwork ensured they were deservedly leading 2-0 at half time with goals from Ryan Finnegan and Jack Marriott.

In the second half Willenhall started brighter but it was Rothwell that extended their lead through Mason Thomas. As the half wore on, a speculative cross and a defensive mix up allowed Willenhall to reduce the scoreline. Rothwell entertain high-flying Chesham this weekend with manager Rob Dunion looking for a performance like last Saturday against Atherstone and not the performance shown in the farcical fixture in the rain against Romulus.

Dunion: "The elements were awful but the performance was damper than the weather. We have got to be more resilient than that and we have an opportunity on Saturday to put that right.

" If we can keep picking points up then I see no reason to start panicking but if we don't then we will invite pressure on, its in our hands.

Kevin Byrne and Bobby White will return to Saturday's squad after missing out on Tuesday.

Adam Bridgeford has left the club by mutual consent. Dunion had this to say: "Adam was a pleasure to work with and a lot of players could take a leaf out of his book in terms of how to conduct yourself both on and off the pitch."

Rothwell from: Allen, Maddox, Pownell, Underwood, White, Hackett, Glass, Koriya, Rogers, Boyle-Chong, Medine, Flannigan, Byrne, Goodall, Linton, McIlwain, Locklin.

> Rothwell Town Under 14s Cup Quarter Final

Tamworth FC 1 - 0 Rothwell Town

With Yate Town not following the correct procedure in the last round, Rothwell were re-instated into the cup and only had a few days to prepare for this clash against a strong and physically superior Tamworth FC team.

In pre-season Tamworth visited Rothwell twice in friendlies and were a dominant force. Over the course of a few months despite at times not playing today to the standard we expect or are capable of, Rothwell Town showed that they have improved no-end and this match was a lot closer.

With a clear physical advantage Tamworth started stronger and tested the strong defences of Rothwell which were marshalled well by Darren Devine at centre back.

Midway through the half some poor defending resulted in Tamworth scoring a free header from a corner. Rothwell Town probed and created some half chances but to no avail.

In the second half Rothwell Town created more chances which on another day we would have converted but at the other end Alex Vitue in goal for Rothwell pulled off some fine saves. As the second half progressed Rothwell attacked Tamworth more and came close to equalising on a few occassions.

With only a few minutes remaining Devante Hodgson found some space but his shot clipped the crossbar and the match ended 1-0 in Tamworth's favour.

On a positive note we must remember how dominant Tamworth were in pre-season whereas today, despite clearly having some lads struggling with injuries and illness we showed how much we have improved as a team or individuals since then.

Next Match: League Home to Willenhall Sat 7th Feb.

Tonight's U18s game away at Thrapston has been called off, due to a waterlogged pitch.

James approached Rothwell at Christmas asking for a trial stating he felt whilst S&L had beaten Rothwell in two encounters this season this was at the expense of his personal development and felt that Rothwell were developing their players for greater things and he wanted to be part of it. With agreement reached between S&L and Rothwell and necessary paperwork complete James wass available for tonight’s league tie - now called off.

“In his trial period he has impressed both Rob and myself not only with his potential but his willingness to learn, it is now our job to nurture this and help him become the player he wants to be and his potential has shown.” said Rothwell Town U18s manager Antony Owen.

Pilkington 0 - 2 Rothwell Town

Having lost to Pilkington earlier in the season, Rothwell travelled to this away fixture full of confidence having won their last 6 league matches in a row. On a dreadful pitch, a quick start by Rothwell allowed Mason Thomas to superbly convert a shot from the edge of the box - within the 1st minute - that just clipped under the crossbar before resting inside the back of the net.

Pilkington continued to probe but during the season the defence of Rothwell has improved immensely and was once again superb today. Rothwell limited Pilkington to some long-range efforts and one of the few times they looked dangerous in front of goal Craig Wood timed his excellent slide tackle superbly to clear the danger.

In the second half Rothwell should have extended their lead but found Pilkington's keeper in fine form. Then Pilkington finally broke through the defence and an excellent double save from Alex Vitue ensured Pilkington never equalised. Shortly after some neat play Jack Marriot coolly converted his opportunity to seal the well-earned victory.

> Rothwell Town u18s run out 8-0 winners

We played Arlesey last night in our third league match of the Southern League Youth Cup, and came out comprehensive 8-0 winners.

After a month lay-off Rothwell played against a slightly younger Arlesey - who are top of their league, and whilst inexperienced are a good footballing side.

Rothwell played possession football moving the ball around in all directions waiting for various openings, however at times the break in games showed with the poor decision making in the final third.

An early goal and a second mid-way through the first half saw confidence grow and the last 15 of the first half saw some good combination play.

The second half Rothwell start where they left off and the possession football and combination play was of a very high level as the opposition weakened - no finer example than the eighth goal.

It started at left back, across the park through the midfield on to the overlapping fall back, back in to the centre on the edge of the box with a little combination before finally ending up in the net.

Goal scorers: Nick Herbert (3), Kyle Locklin (2), Callum Aldrich, Zakk Hill, and Michael Cirelli.

Congratulations to Nick - first ever hat-trick and had only 45 minutes to do it in.

Biggest disappointment - size of the crowd. We only took £40 which meant after paying 3 officials and buffet we suffered a financial loss. Personally, I think the under 18’s provide good value for money and worth the couple of pounds for an adult and a pound for a child.

Next 2 games are away to Woodford on Monday, which if we win will see us through to the Quarter Final knock-out stages and then away to Thrapston on Thursday.

Good support for this fixture would be appreciated.

> Two sign up to Centre of Excellence

Rothwell Town Youth Development Centre are pleased to announce that two of their development squad have signed contracts for Peterborough United Centre of Excellence. The Youth section has been attracting great interest from a number of League clubs of late and a number of players from the ages of under 14s to under 18s have received trials or contracts at varying pro clubs over the last year.

Both Devante Hodgson and Alex Vitue from the under 14s have taken advantage of the training schedule they receive and also the links with professional clubs the Youth section has. Whilst also playing for Peterborough they have agreed for both players to remain at Rothwell Town til at least the end of the season as they feel it will enhance the players development even further and also help maintain Rothwell Town's charge up the Midlands Premier League table.

> u18s win 5-0 at Arlesey/Two sign Southern League forms

Rothwell Town Youth played away at Arlesey on Tuesday night and came away 5-0 winners.

Arlesey had a very young side out who tried to play football and gave everything in the right manner, but the age difference showed. We did not play particularly well but the age diiference told with goals coming from Ryan Cherry (2), Callum Bowyer, Kyle Locklin and Aaron Cormack.

The under 18’s and 1st team started training together last Monday and will carry on - on Monday’s and Tuesday’s - as games permit. This has led to Callum Bowyer and Kyle Locklin today signing Southern League forms.

> Rothwell Town 0 - 6 Leamington

Leamington showed today exactly why they are top of the British Gas Business Division One Midlands as they recorded a strong victory at Cecil Street.

The Bones were behind just 2 minutes into the game as Bellingham netted for the away side, and it wasn't long before he doubled his tally in the 9th minute. 16 minutes into the first half and Rothwell were 3-0 down as Herlihy struck for Leamington. Bellingham completed a first-half hat-trick on 39 minutes to make it 0-4 heading into the break.

Into the second half and Lenton put the away team 5-0 up eight minutes into proceedings, then around the hour mark both teams had a man sent off as Pete Sneddon walked for violent conduct, with a Leamington player seeing red for retaliation in the same incident. Lenton then rubbed salt into the wound on 90 minutes with his second of the afternoon.

Rothwell have the opportunity to make swift amends on Tues night when Romulus visit Cecil Street, kick-off is at 7.45pm.

Leamington come to Cecil Street with an enviable unbeaten record and manager Rob Dunion is hoping that the pitch may be a leveler and help his team's plight in causing an upset.

" We can beat any team on our day but we must make sure that all departments are firing on all cylinders. We had 5 regulars missing last Saturday and the guys who came in gave a superb all round performance and tomorrow i will be looking for that same passion and application. "

Rothwell Town 1 v 0 Stourport Swifts

Devante Hodgson (1)

After playing good football for the last number of weeks Rothwell Town struggled to get into any rhythm today. Stourport passed the ball well without creating many clear goal scoring opportunities thanks to the defensive strength of Rothwell. The first half ending 0-0.

In the second half both teams upped their tempo and could of scored early on. With approx 10 minutes to go and the match looking destined for a draw, a great ball found Devante Hodgson and he found the back of the net with a clinical finish. This opened the match up and Stourport had a great chance to equalize almost immediately only for Alex Vitue in Rothwell's goal to pull off a great save to ensure the scoreline finish 1-0 in Rothwell's favour. Well done to both sides.

> u18's sneak win in the Cup

Rothwell Town 12 - 2 Woodford United

After 20 minutes Rothwell were 8-0 ahead, the lads started from the first minute on a very heavy pitch and took every chance. No more can really be said about the tie.

Goal scorers were Kyle Locklin (7), Jake Linell (2), Michael Cirelli (1), Callum Aldrich (1) and Ryan Cherry (1).

The initial feedback on Michaels debut was worked hard, nice touches but too lightweight in the challenges. We started working on his weaknesses last night and the other players who are also technically gifted but again lightweight in the defensive parts of the game.

> u18's at home to Woodford tonight

The under 18’s are at home to Woodford tonight, in the first tie of the BSB Southern Youth Cup, which has drawn them in a group with Woodford United, Arseley and Bury Town.

With Chris Nimmo, Sam Taylor and Aaron Cormack out injured and Marvellous Entiriwaa’s registration received too late, it gives the rest of the squad a chance to show that last week's second half under-performance was a minor blip in their continued improvement.

With Michael Cirelli getting his debut in tonight’s GX cup game, it will give the squad a deserved lift and give the first team and youth management a gauge on where the youth are in relation to adult football.

Good luck Michael, the talent is there you just need that little bit of luck early doors that gives you a confident boost so the rest flows naturally

If somebody travelled to the game let us know on the fans forum how you thought he got on.
