Dominic Hallows' first-half
winner saw Rothwell Town off to the perfect start,
earning them victory over strongly-fancied AFC
Sudbury.
His goal came on 38 minutes when Tom Mills and
Jason Turner linked up on the right.
Mills set up Hallows with a square pass from
the edge of the penalty area which was powered
into the bottom corner, giving visiting keeper
Richard Wilmott no chance.
The game had started fairly low key and for the
first half, both teams cancelled each other out.
But the Bones looked the brighter with Turner
and Mills both having chances to take the lead.
Gradually the home side gained momentum and,
following the goal, Kevin Byrne was just over
with a header from a corner and the same player
had another header well saved by Wilmott on the
stroke of half-time.
Rothwell continued to push and David Glass had
a shot touched onto the post seven minutes after
the restart.
Just before the hour mark, Sudbury were down
to 10 men when Stuart Ainsley was given his marching
orders for kicking and punching Bones skipper
Adam Sturgess on the ground.
Further chances fell to Hallows and Turner to
make the points safe. But Hallows' goal turned
out to be enough to seal a thoroughly deserved
win for Rothwell.
Bones manager Rob Dunion said: "It was a
very good win and a very good display.
"We should have taken more of our chances
and won by a greater margin. But I suppose that's
just being greedy!
"We dictated the game for 90 minutes and
looked very solid at the back so it all worked
out very well and I'm happy."
