Rothwell Town 0 - 1 Chasetown
Alan Biley admitted that his narrow
defeat was a disappointing end to the season for Rothwell Town.
But he paid tribute to the efforts of his players. The Bones boss
said: "We have got a young side and they have done tremendously
well this season. They can all feel proud of themselves. This game
was always going to be one that was settled by the odd goal and
Chasetown got it. But it was very close. We had a good go at them
in the second half but just couldn't score."
The decisive goal came in the 29th
minute. A long clearance bounced in front of Paul Rice and over
his head. Then the lively Paul McMahon just had to run round him
before lobbing the ball over Bones keeper Tom Smith into an empty
net. The goal came after chances had been squandered by both Danny
Nicholls and Michale Boyle-Chong while Ricky Miller also fired over
the bar just before the break.
The second half began with more pressure
from Chasetown. But the Rothwell defence stood firm. A superb move
saw the visitors narrowly miss out on increasing their lead. A three-man
move ended with McMahon shooting just inches wide of the target.
And Rothwell would have expected a goal from another fine Miller
effort. However Lee Evans pulled off an excellent save to deny him.
The Bones continued to push hard with
Boyle-Chong also forcing a save from Evans. But Chasetown were happy
to sit back and protect their slender lead to complete a double
over the Bones. Understandably so, as the three points they earned
from it sealed them a spot in the play-offs.
