FA
Cup 1st Qualifying Round Replay
Enfield Town 2 - 2 Rothwell
Town
(AET - Enfield won 4-3 on
pens)
IAN JACKSON and his Rothwell Town players can
hold their heads up high following their performance in this FA
Cup first qualifying round replay.
The BGB Southern League side went out to their
Ryman League hosts in the worst way possible way – beaten
on penalties. And this was after 120 minutes in which they had worked
their socks and twice come from behind.
Every Bones player was worthy of mention, notably
keeper Tom Smith, who during normal and extra-time, pulled off a
string of magnificent saves.
In front of him, the back four of Richard Challinor,
Martin Flannigan, Adam Sturgess and Ben Greasley stood like the
Great Wall of China against the screaming hordes.
The midfield worked tirelessly, helping
out the defence and supporting the strikers, while up front Kevin
Byrne and
Fazel Koriya had the home defence sometimes wondering which way
was up or down.
Rudi Hall put the home side ahead from the
penalty spot on 23 minutes. But Koriya levelled three minutes later
for Bones.
The battle continued until the 57th minute
when the ball was unfortunately given away and a through-ball to
Brian Hannatt was collected and slid under Smith.
Rothwell were not to be denied and continue
to battle and in the 75th minute a free-kick by Adam Sturgess was
chipped over the advancing Town keeper by Byrne.
On 83 minutes, Rothwell were lucky
when a superb shot by substitute Andy Edmunds struck the bar. But
at 90 minutes it was all-square. Without a doubt Rothwell 'won'
the extra-time period, but were unable to out the ball in the net.
Even in the shoot-out, Smith saved
the first penalty, but then came two misses by the visitors and
their cup run was unluckily over.
