Willenhall Town 2 - 0 Rothwell Town

British Gas Business League Division One Midlands

Saturday 8th March 2008

IAN JACKSON admitted he was "very disappointed all round" after his Rothwell Town side slipped to another defeat, this time at the hands of Willenhall.

Jackson said: "I'm disappointed because we created enough chances to win two games comfortably but we didn't take them.

"Not enough players out there looked like they wanted it enough. "Their first goal was very disappointing defensively – we made it far too easy for them.

"We also had a bang-on shout for a penalty turned down.

"We've just got to pick ourselves up now because our game against bottom side Berkhamsted next Saturday is a six-pointer if ever there was one!"

Willenhall bossed the early exchanges of this game, with a gusty wind behind them, and captain Steve Edwards fired just wide on the half hour.

Bones keeper Tom Smith was forced into a good save of a shot from Tony Nicholls just before the break.

Rothwell came more into the game in the second half, and chances fell to Chris Difante and Adam Cunnington. However, it was the visitors who took the lead.

A corner on the left was headed on at the near post by Scott Stamp and, with the Rothwell defence playing statues, Dan Harvey was able to force the ball home at the far post.

Two minutes later, the Bones could have been level, but Robert Ritchie-Smith shot over from six yards.

The controversial penalty decision came on 68 minutes when, in a period of domination, Steve Purton was brought down from behind.

The referee only awarded a throw-in and, when questioned after the game, said that he didn't think the defender had deliberately tripped the player?

This seemed to take the sting out of the Bones, although they continued to push forward.

However, this left them open at the back and with two minutes to go, Josh McKenzie lobbed the advancing Smith.

Rothwell didn't deserve to win this game, but they certainly deserved a point for their efforts.

They must now gear themselves up for next Saturday's clash against Berkhamstead at Cecil Street, where they are in a must-win situation.
