Rothwell Town 0 - 3 Chasetown

British Gas Business League Division One Midlands

Tuesday 1st April - k/o 7.45pm

Class will out in the end, in football as in life. Rothwell Town competed well for a long time in this Southern League Division One Midlands game and by common consensus were unlucky to be trailing at half-time. But promotion-chasing Chasetown stepped up a notch after the break and, while the goals didn't come until the final quarter, there was no denying they deserved them.

Given that they came to national attention with their remarkable FA Cup exploits this season, it's sometimes easy to forget about what level Chasetown actually play at.

But having seen them mix it with the likes of Cardiff City, we half expect them to play lke Brazil when they return to the less-celebrated ground of the Southern League.

When they don't turn on the style, we almost feel short-changed.

That is, of course, rather unfair on the Scholars who are clued-in enough to know their level. As such, they are able to adopt the same mentality for a cold Tuesday night at Cecil Street that they had for a glamour FA Cup tie in front of thousands.

Rothwell knew this level too and it enabled them to respect the Scholars without fearing them. This made for an even first half until Ben Greasley fouled Dean Perrow on 30 minutes and Mark Branch curled the resultant free-kick into the top corner of Tom Smith's net.

The goal leaned more towards the Brazil side of things and the second was also high in quality, Perrow breaking clear on 77 minutes and skillfully lobbing Smith as the keeper advanced. But if the first two goals were classy, the third owed much to controversy.

On 82 minutes Perrow was flagged offside when he looked on. A minute later, he was clearly off but given on and he duly lifted the ball past Smith to put seal on three points for the visitors. The result enhanced Chasetown's chances of reaching the end-of-season play-offs while the Bones remain third from bottom.
