Rothwell Town 2 - 0 Enfield
Rothwell Town now lie only four points
away from the play-off spots thanks to this win which saw them do
the double over Enfield. And it was the first defeat of 2006 for
the side who have previously won both the FA Trophy and Conference
title twice.
Justin Jenkins, playing his last game
before he serves a three-match ban, proved a thorn in the side for
Enfield from the start. On 11 minutes his mazy run led to him being
brought down in the box. A penalty was awarded and Steve Towers
made no mistake to send Rothwell into the lead. Keeper Tom Smith
had to be on his toes as Enfield launcheed their first attack of
the game and he did well to save a shot from Marion Stuart. The
Bones had another let-off when a Stuart volley hit the crossbar.
Michael Boyle-Chong went close on
two occasions for the hosts while Jenkins forced a good save from
Stephen Wright but their slender 1-0 advantage remained at the break.
Just before the half closed, Mark Whittington was shown a yellow
card following a clash with Robbie Maddox, and upon entering the
tunnel for the interval he had words with referee Mr Gratton - resulting
in a straight red card.
Despite being a man down, Enfield
then took the game to Rothwell after the break and played some good
football. Leon Green hit the bar again for the visitors while Maddox,
Towers and Boyle-Chong all went close for Rothwell. Jenkins made
the game safe for the Bones with five minutes left on the clock
when he headed home a Towers corner.
Rothwell will hope to build on this
win when they travel to Barking and East Ham next Saturday with
their hopes of reaching the play-offs still very much within reach.
