Boreham Wood 1 - 1 Rothwell Town
This was a magnificent
result for Rothwell Town, considering everything that went against
them. They lost central defender Paul Rice, who took ill on the
trip down to Hertfordshire, and were without Justin Jenkins and
skipper Stuart Spencer, both serving suspensions.
Just to cap it off,
influential midfielder Steve Towers was victim to an undeserved
red card after 39 minutes. But they managed to grind out a result
and became the only team in the division to remain unbeaten against
the champions-elect, much to the delight of manager Dave Williams.
He said: "It was a great day all round really.Obviously Boreham
Wood are a very good side so to get a draw at their ground with
10 men was a very good result. Having Steve sent off so early stuffed
us a bit but we still created a lot of chances and played really
well. The travelling support was also excellent and gave us a boost."
The hosts began strongly
and put early pressure on the Bones. But after 20 minutes Rothwell
gradually worked their way forward and enjoyed more attacking play.
As they gained more control, the visitors took the lead. Andy Almond
picked up the ball 30 yards out and fired a swerving shot into the
top corner. The lead, however, was short-lived as the hosts equalised
just three minutes later. An error by Darren Capps allowed Leon
Archer to run through and slide the ball past Tom Smith.
A melee after half
an hour saw Boreham Wood's assistant manager shown a red card for
entering the field of play, along with most of his subs bench. Then
came Towers' red card for retaliation which only Mr Toyer saw. The
Bones defended stoutly for the second half, keeping the hosts at
bay while also creating their own chances to claim a shock away
victory.
So - the red card
apart - it was a satisfying afternoon for the Bones, and one the
whole team could be proud of.
