Never a downpour when
you need one.
This was the second time Rothwell Town and Romulus
had attempted to play this particular BGB Southern
League Division One Midlands clash.
And, as in the first game, the Bones were second-best.
That original game was abandoned because of torrential
rain with Romulus leading and odds-on for the
points.
The Bones battled better in this rematch. But
a lack of quality - especially upfront - was their
Achilles heel.
And this time, the weather couldn't save them
as Romulus belatedly took the win and probably
felt a kind of justice was done in the process.
A bizarre opening saw Romulus forced into a substitution
after only five minutes as Jason Lanns had an
angry exchange with his manager Richard Evans
before throwing his shirt into the away dugout
and disappearing down the tunnel.
However, the incident only served to unnerve the
Bones as, 60 seconds later, a lightning break
by the Roms ended with Tyrone Fagan stumbling
his way through the tackles to score.
They doubled the lead on 25 minutes with another
poor goal from Rothwell's perspective as defenders
stood and watched while Thomas Franklin bundled
the ball home from close range after initially
heading against the bar.
The second half saw Rothwell enjoying more of
the ball but without really threatening to break
through.
